I wanted to call this the idolatry of scripture and the logocentricism of Christianity but didn't have room.
I don't see the bible like most evangelical Christians and believe a canonisation of scripture to be a form of cessationism. What are peoples views on the importance of scripture to the Christian. |

Ill explain a little further my views as i realise i havent really done it.
I think to view the bible as inerrant or infallible is to view it in a way which the plurality of voices it holds are forced to sing the same tune. The ancient mind did not have the same desire for objective accounts of truth and reality as we have, and they were much happier with the idea that a narrative can be both true, and mythical at the same time. to read this narratives with the presupposition that they are literally true is to read in a way which the earliest readers/hearers were unaccustomed too.
a perfect example is the creation story in genesis. I find it very hard to accept that an ancient hebrew writer had any concern with providing a 'scientific' and objective account of how the universe came to exist as it does. i see this account as a reflection on the power and love of the hebraic deity which is presented as a poem of creation.
secondly, i struggle with the concept of 'an' inspired canon of scripture to which nothing can be added or taken away. its hard to argue that the bible is inspired by using bible texts as its a circular arguement. it suggests that after about 100 C.E, the spirit stopped inspiring people to write scripture, God's word was finished... did he have nothing left to say? (this is why i see it as cessationism).
there is more, but i have band practice. |
